Just for fun, if anyone is (like me) not too good at the original Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon game, you can always try out The Oracle of Bacon at Virginia. There’s a lot of other interesting stuff dotted around The Oracle, too - it’s a nice site to help you lose a few hours.
Alex Iskold from Read/WriteWeb has written an excellent article about how Amazon (in the US, at least) is going “Web 2.0″ with new features such as tagging and blogging for items in the store.
I really like how Amazon are attempting to generate a community around the site. I think in the long term, as tagging and blogging become more mainstream, this will benefit them in terms of sales. My only quibble is that all of this activity seems to be focused, for the time being at least, on Amazon US and not their other sites. Living in the UK, I’ve bought only a handful of difficult-to-find CDs or DVDs from their US site; most of my purchases come from Amazon UK.
So I’m hopeful that these new ideas will be rolled out across the other Amazon sites. In the meantime, though, it’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re having trouble tracking an item down in your own country, you might find it on one of the other 8 Amazon sites in different countries.
Thanks to Google Reader, I was able to recover all of my old posts! I forgot that when you’re subscribed to a feed in Reader, although it marks articles read as you read them, they’re still available to view when you click on “show all”. Everything’s now restored apart from one comment lost.
I’ve been using Sony ACID Pro for a while now. It’s an incredibly versatile package for writing music (Windows only, I’m afraid).
I just noticed today, however, that Sony have a cut-down version of ACID, called ACID Xpress, available to download for free. Together with a new free 8Pack of loops they make available for download every week, it’s a nice free intro to the world of making music.
