Off the beaten track
I just found out about the Mainstream-O-Meter for Last.fm users. I saw it mentioned over on the Last.fm blog.
The Mainstream-O-Meter rates me at 4.52% mainstream. Given that I’m in The Far Corner, of course, this doesn’t really come as a surprise to me.
Now, I happen to know that Miss Nexy of Step Into the Nexus is on Last.fm, because we just added each other as friends. And you can find my music profile here if you’re interested. At the moment my PC isn’t connected to the amplifier, so it doesn’t reflect everything I listen to, because most of that’s being played on the CD deck at the moment.
But what about you? Do you use Last.fm? And if not, why not?
And more importantly, if you do, what’s your username and mainstream percentage?

I never heard of Last.fm, but that’s not unusual. I’ve been away from blogging for about a week or so, so I expect a couple thousand new features have appeared in my absence! But it sounds interesting, I’ll check it out because I feel that I’m not in the mainstream, especially the Mainstream Media. LOL

Oh dear, I’m sorry. It’s about favorite bands. Since I don’t really have any, I guess I have a zero reading on the Mainstream-O-Meter. But I do like your site, and the “Hey, is this thing on?” really gave me laugh. Humor is great!

Well, it’s not so much about favourite bands, Mardé, as about finding recommendations for music you might like. So if you play some jazz or classical music, for example, the artist/composer and track names are sent up to the Last.fm site.
It’s likely that others on Last.fm will share your taste in music, and you can then tune in to their “radio station” and find other music you might like.
If you like any kind of music, it’s well worth trying.

I’ve been using last.fm since 2004 (http://www.last.fm/user/ithinkdancan/) and love it. I actually pay a few bucks each month to get the extra features and no ads. Since almost everything i listen to is done on my PC or iPod, its a pretty accurate record of what i listen to.
I am 11.78 % mainstream

Thanks, Daniel - I’ve been a subscriber for a while now too, and it’s well worth it.
I’ll hook up with you over there.

I’m registered with Last.fm but rarely goes there anymore.

I use Last Fm but it’s not all I listen to as I have my ipod connected and playing a lot of the time my computer is not on.
My username is Ladybanana (surprise surprise) and my mainstream is
21.04 % mainstream
Now is that a good or a bad thing!

Thanks, LB - request sent.
Your 21.04% means that you listen to more of the music that most people listen to than I do, so your musical taste is towards what’s more popular than what’s more obscure. And this could be taken as either a good thing or a bad thing!
