Blog walkabout, 24 June 2007

I wasn’t able to do a blog walkabout last week due to work commitments, so it’s good to be back, at home, and able to catch up with what’s new around the blogosphere.

First stop today is Alaska, USA, where Sandy Goliver pens At Your Service. Sandy provides a useful mix of topical news items and information about product recalls in the USA. I had no idea so many faulty or dangerous items were shipped from factories and food manufacturing premises. Nice work, Sandy!

Paul O’Flaherty is an Irish guy, living in Denmark and blogging about technology on O’Flaherty. Paul writes about the most tricked-out pool table ever, which for reasons known only to the designer has an LCD TV so close to the ground only your pets would watch it. This is my kind of bizarre. He also has an insightful article about Divya Uttam’s Blogging to Fame competition.

Lina Mushahar from Ireland looks after [B][E][A][U][T][I][F][U][L]. She’s also very active on StumbleUpon, and has written a two-part tutorial on how to use that service, the first part of which can be found here. I’ve been using StumbleUpon since October 2005, and you’ll find me over there on this page.

Jason Stone from California, USA has a computing blog called What a Geek!. Jason has news about a WordPress plugin that allows you to place a poll directly on your blog, and you can see what it looks like on his blog. Useful stuff.

From Germany, Mihaela Lica runs a public relations blog entitled eWritings. I enjoyed Mihaela’s take on sponsored reviews. I’ve never written a sponsored review, and I don’t think it’s something I’d consider. To be honest, I’m more likely to unsubscribe from blogs that do so too often. But I understand that some bloggers are making money this way, and good luck to them.

TheSkySoBlah is owned by Randy Maness from Texas, USA. Randy has a lovely balance of personal life events, such as starting a new job, and one-off thoughts on things like computer-related retro. The blog design is smart too. I’ll be subscribing to this one.

Shelly Kneupper Tucker from Texas, USA writes in This Eclectic Life about anything and everything that interests her, which is just fine by me. Shelly makes a thought-provoking point about how valuable the concept of “branding” can be within a community. Although she uses a dreadful pun in the title (and she knows it!), please go read the article and think about what she says.

David Airey is a self-employed graphic designer in my home town, Edinburgh. I’ve never met him, but the design of his blog, Creative Design, and the number of subscribers it has, is a sound demonstration of his capabilities. David shares his favourite creative music videos with us. The OK Go “Here It Goes Again” video (at a cool 18 million views) has been a personal favourite of mine since I first saw it on TV.

It would be odd if I didn’t find a blogger from the Philippines on my walkabout. No need to worry, then, when I found Bloggista, run by Augel. You can learn more about Augel over here. She writes about experiencing an earthquake a few days ago, and about how her dog slept through the event. I hope he’s not a watchdog!

Finally, I mentioned in an earlier walkabout that I love reading travel blogs from far-flung places. The Australian Kham Tran’s blog about Vietnam, together with its liberal sprinkling of photographs, makes a refreshing change from the endless and depressing Scottish rain. The random shots of Saigon give a real flavour of the city, too. Enjoyable and upbeat.

That’s all for today, folks. Enjoy your week

Baxter, thank you very much for the mention and for the link love. I’m really glad you like that entry. I don’t have anything against bloggers who write sponsored reviews on regular basis, as long as I see that the review is genuine and provides good information on the reviewed site/product. I don’t like positive reviews because I know that no one is perfect and there is always room for improvements. Bloggers should understand that they are being paid for value and not for links, and advertisers should stop requesting for all positive reviews. There is no real gain from a positive review. The web users are not stupid. They don’t fall for false pretends.
Now, about the other sites listed here: you’ve got a great rundown. I read David Airey’s blog and I was not familiar with any of the other ones you list. I’ve stumbled your entry to have it as reference when I have more time to visit these blogs.

Mihaela, thanks for taking the time to comment. I’ll reply on your comment about sponsored reviews shortly, over on eWritings.

Re your last paragraph, please be aware that there are earlier walkabouts here which point to more blogs with great content! You can click on the “blog” in the category list to find them.

Thanks for the mention of my post! I didn’t think anyone would read on a lazy Sunday morning, but I appreciate that you did. Sorry for that awful pun…it’s a habit from which I can’t refrain. I need to look around here at your place and alert my readers to come here for a visit!

Thank you for the reply. You have an answer from me on that post too. :)

The point is: I know you have great content and you choose wonderful blogs. I just don’t have the time these days to take an “in depth” look. I like to “study” the things I stumble upon before making an opinion. I had enough time to read through your blog today.

    Hello Baxter,

Thanks very much for the mention! It’s appreciated.

From Edinburgh eh? There was a recent Beer 2.0 night last week for Edinburgh’s online publishers (amongst others). I wonder if you knew of it? There’s another this Thursday.

    David, no problem.

Beer 2.0, huh? Sounds interesting! Thanks for letting me know. Where and when is it, please? I don’t know whether I’ll be able to manage this one, but I sure would like to know more.

Hi, it is me again! I left you a new comment on my blog with links to video commercials by Google, Linux and AMD. :) I’d do more research for you if you want, but I think we are just wasting our time. Everyone pays, one way or the other. They need the buzz and they all manipulate the public because… well because this is what sales is all about! I’d still read a paid review which is a full critique of a site/product than watch such a commercial.

Mihaela, I can honestly say I’ve not seen any of these adverts here in the UK. Perhaps someone else from the UK can tell me whether they’ve seen any of these in this country?
