Blog walkabout, 20 May 2007

Welcome to my third blog walkabout, where I look at what others are saying around the blogosphere.

Colin Campbell, an ex-pat Scot living in Australia, writes in Adelaide Green Porridge Cafe about a tequila moment that he experienced. Please be aware of potential effect this firewater, and treat it with respect. I’m sure Colin does.

Princesse Ecossaise is currently studying languages at The University of Edinburgh (my home town) and intends to move to France when she completes her studies. She has a very funny post over at La Belle Saison about bilingual misunderstandings, entitled “I’d like to insert you into my mother“. Wonderful stuff.

Wakish Wonderz, a blog from Mauritius, has a nice article on the use of the robots.txt file, which is likely to be useful for anyone running their own website or blog. This will help you stop those bad bots from eating up your bandwidth.

Faddy at the wittily named Singaporean blog Fingers Don’t Fing writes about the top five reasons why pirated DVDs are bad. I’ve never bought one, and having read this, I’m glad. I detest, though, how when I do buy a DVD from the shops, I have to sit through the piracy warnings which I can’t skip, while someone watching a pirate copy will never see these warnings. Why alienate legitimate customers?

SapphireKnight is a blog from Malaysia which specialises in software and web development. Ahmad Sofi has some valuable content here about WordPress, Google and general tips about blogging. He also has some good advice on how to get the most out of MyBlogLog.

Aunt Najma from Iraq writes in her blog A Star from Mosul about the chaotic events which took place after the death of her grandfather. A curfew meant that around 25 women who had arrived to pay their condolences ended up not being able to leave her house for some time. I’m sorry to hear about her loss. Take care, Najma.

I certainly had a little dose of the sun looking at the photographs of the islands of New Caledonia at 5 minutes en Nouvelle-Caledonie. What a stunningly beautiful location. Please be sure to have a look at the calendar wallpapers, one per month, on the blog. There are widescreen versions available too.

Paula Neal Mooney from Akron, Ohio is always a good read. She’s written a great article about how to increase the traffic on your blog. And there’s another excellent post from earlier this month about the impact of DOFOLLOW on Google PageRank. In case readers are wondering, I’ve been using DOFOLLOW for a few months, and what Paula describes is correct. My PageRank recently went from PR0 to PR3.

Jayce Ooi’s Paradise is another blog from Malaysia. Jayce writes about how he’s managed to get onto the first page of a Google search searching only with his first name. I’ve an unusual first name, but I’m not on the first page of a Google search yet (though I am with my surname). Way to go, Jayce!

Finally today, I stopped by EleanorBlog, which is run by Alison, a Londoner currently living in Scotland. Alison is also starting a website about Eleanor of Castille. She’s found some wonderful origami - amazing stuff.

Alison’s is the last blog in this weekend’s walkabout. I hope you find some good reading.
