Blog walkabout, 11 May 2007
Welcome to my second blog walkabout, where I visit a few blogs, covering a variety of subjects, to see what’s going on elsewhere.
My first stop, Andy Kong’s MathPoints, a Canadian blog, is always an interesting read. I particularly enjoy his Tech Buzz roundups, where he garners together lots of useful tech news from interesting articles he’s discovered. Here’s the most recent example.
The mysterious Dunn from Indonesia (is Dunn her first name, second name, or nickname?) keeps a journal of the unusual, weird and downright bizarre at My Interesting Files. I don’t know where she finds these, but take a look at “These Are Just Pencils” as an example of the sort of content you can expect from Dunn.
Singaporean Hardono Arifanto’s Sodeve notes that from June 2007, sending unsolicited email will be against the law in Singapore. It’ll also be illegal to harvest email addresses or to purchase a list harvested by others. It’s always nice to see some action being taken against spam.
Kristin from Connecticut, USA doesn’t write nearly often enough for me in Rants and Ravings of a Redhead, but what she writes there is always intelligent and perceptive. I didn’t ever want to mention Paris Hilton here at The Far Corner, but no rational person could disagree with Kristin’s post on the nonsensical attempt to get Ms Hilton pardoned for the DUI charge. Some so-called celebrities believe they are above the law. They shouldn’t be.
Australian Laurie Joyce began Sunrays and Saturdays when his father died. It’s gratifying to see something positive arise from such sadness. Laurie covers a number of issues in his personal blog, including telling us about his own childhood, and also about an episode involving his daughter being bullied, which thankfully appears to be resolved.
Holly from Chicago, USA dreamed that two members of Aerosmith were hanging out in her apartment, and she shared this with us over at Remedial Rumination. I hope Steven Tyler and Joe Perry didn’t wake the neighbours…
Nirun Chaiyadet, a blogger from Thailand, writes about web development in HTML PHP CSS Web 2.0. The blog has only been around for a few weeks, but I wish him every success. I always learn something new from it.
Malyn Maramba from the Philippines writes in TinySigns about programming, the internet and social networking. Malyn speculates on the usefulness of link trains and linkbacks in “Too Many Social Networking Trains - which one works?“, and she suggests that we shouldn’t become obsessed with trying to get too much blog traffic too quickly. Another new blog that deserves to do well.
David Jones from the US runs JonesPC: Ramblings of an Urban Geek. David describes his typical day and how little time it leaves him for blogging. He’s obviously enjoying himself, and wonders how people have time to manage multiple blogs. I can definitely relate to this. Running The Far Corner takes enough of my time.
Last but by no means least, Sharon Herbert is a librarian in Canada. Her blog Ghosts in the Machine is always an excellent read. Sharon’s specialisms are exploring digital identity, privacy and knowledge management. Her insightful and thought-provoking views on anonymity on the internet make sobering reading. Highly recommended.
